I remember I was chatting with my friend a while ago about dildo Newfoundland, as that was something we where curious about. She asked me “Hey, do you know where the name dildo in Newfoundland comes from?”. I was a bit taken back but I knew the answer – it’s been such an interesting phenomenon!
It turns out the name originates from an old fishing term ‘dildoe’, which was a type of lazy jack – a sailboat mast. So it’s thought that the town was named after the boat mast, due to its long connection to the fishing trade. In fact, the town of Dildo is so deeply intertwined with the fishing industry that its harbour is still a popular port for fishing vessels to this day.
It’s a peculiarly unique spot – with its stunning views, rolling hills, and winding streets – and yet, dildos it is so often overshadowed by its amusing name. Can you believe it’s been in existence for over 350 years? That’s quite impressive, isn’t it?
There are plenty of fascinating stories surrounding the origin of the name. Some say the name refers to a type of ship while others suggest it derives from the Gaelic phrase for Penis Rings ‘Island of Women’. Of course, there’s no definitive answer – it just adds to its charm.
No matter the explanation, I think it is hilarious – and for some, perhaps even a bit embarrassing – that a place could have such an outlandish name. But it also speaks to the resilience of the place, and the people who live there. Despite its unusual moniker, Dildo is still a thriving coastal town with a unique history and culture that is deeply rooted in its fishing industry past.
I think that’s truly remarkable. I mean, imagine being able to say that your hometown is called a Dildo! It’s funny to think how, if we change the context, the word ‘Dildo’ can mean so many different things.
My friend said she will be visiting Dildo in a few weeks to take in the atmosphere and take a few pictures – I’m super jealous! I can never get over the charm of the place and the uniqueness of its name. It’s a place I would absolutely love to visit in the future.
So what do you think? Have you ever heard about Dildo Newfoundland or have any funny anecdotes to share?
The other day I was asking around if anyone had ever gone to Dildo or heard any funny stories about it. I chatted to another friend of mine who shared an amazing story about his experience there. He visited the town a few years ago and he was curious why the place was so called – he figured if he asked a local they would have the answer.
So he asked the question to a few kids at the local school and they were all absolutely bursting to share. They excitedly told him that according to local legend, the name Dildo came from the mischievous dogs that used to live in the area. Supposedly, these dogs would sneak away from their owners and dig deep holes in the sand and it’s said that the name came from their antics.
It was quite a wonderful tale to hear and it made me even more keen to visit the place myself. There’s something terribly special about the place and it’s history – I just love the idea of a wild but friendly bunch of dogs creating something close to Dildo Newfoundland that we all know and recognize today.
It’s quite amazing to think of how the name originated from these wild dogs, who are now considered an integral part of the Dildo’s community’s story. I mean, if not for the mischievous behavior of those dogs, there wouldn’t be such an amazing, historic town today.
The dogs weren’t the only ones digging in the sand of course. Dildo Newfoundland’s harbour is also home to a variety of natural structures that are believed to have been in the area since the 1600s. They are visible from the shore and it’s difficult not to get lost in its fascinating history.
What I find so amazing about the place is that aside from its amazing natural features, it boasts a unique history and culture. The people here have been fishing for centuries, and this is reflected in everything from the architecture and decor to the way of life.
I mean, just imagine living in a coastal town with that sort of rich history, and having a unique name to boot! I would definitely love to go someday and experience it all firsthand. Would you? Let me know in the comments.
